Information for Parents

At Westlands School we encourage all parents to take an active interest in the development of their child and maintain regular contact with the school, as we believe partnership with parents is central to our success.

Primary

We have three primary classes that are set by ability and age group and a cross phase class of Y6 and Y7 pupils. Pupils follow a primary curriculum model differentiated to meet their needs. This allows for more able pupils, who can achieve at age appropriate levels, to make good academic progress. Where we are able to resolve their behaviour, emotional and social difficulties, we can then successfully return them to mainstream education.

Our primary uniform is blue. Interested parents can find out about purchasing the uniform from the school office on 01642 883030.

Secondary

We have three teaching groups across Key Stage 3 organised around ability and behavioural needs. The curriculum is delivered through 'nurture groups' with tutors delivering the core, humanities, PSHCE (Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education) and Religious Education. Specialist teachers deliver Science, PE, Food Technology, Craft, Design and Technology and ICT. The school has a combined Y10 and Y11 population which follows a vocational and practical skills curriculum with appropriate accreditation.

Each afternoon students progress with set lessons or select from a range of options. These include Mechanics, Bike Maintenance, Food Technology, Art, Ceramics, Textiles, Horticulture, Design Technology and 'Changing Rooms' (painting and decorating). P.E is offered as a set lesson and activities include Football Skills, Judo, Ice Skating and Swimming, and the school is developing its very own 'fitness centre'.

The timetable and subjects we offer provide a range of courses and provide students with the opportunity to develop skills and gain qualifications including The Princes Trust Bronze Award, Key Skills and GCSEs. We aim to offer a range of subjects which create interest and provide skills and qualifications to prepare students for their working life. We also enjoy links with Stockton Riverside College.

Our Key Stage 3 uniform is red and Key Stage 4 uniform is grey. Details and purchase arrangements can be discussed with our school office on 01642 883030.

SEAL

Social Skills

SEAL (the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) is a comprehensive approach to promoting the social and emotional skills that underpin effective learning, positive behaviour and regular attendance. Through a range of learning outcomes we work to promote the 5 aspects of SEAL which are: self awareness, social skills, empathy, motivation and managing feelings. In the past year Westlands has begun to embed these aspects through the curriculum.
